4/11/07: Midweek Look at the Business Blogs
There are two great things about reading blogs. First of all, you usually get a real point of view. There's not even any pretend objectivity. Second, when comments are posted you can see how others react to that point of view and maybe even put your own two cents in.
Here are some blog posts that caught my attention at mid-week. I'm pointing you to the Carnival of the Capitalists and posts on turnover, CEO pay going up because of performance, why an overhead projector might be your best presentation tool, talent management, and an excellent review of emerging technology.
Start with the most recent Carnival of the Capitalists. You'll find pointers to lots of quality posts.
From Guerilla HR: Time to go; when turnover isn't really a bad thing
"Sure, turnover is a critical stat for any organization to watch, and I fully acknowledge that the cost of turnover can be something like 150% to 250% of a person's salary, and some will argue that these costs make higher levels of turnover unsustainable. But while these are basically true, they sort of lead you to believe that lower turnover is better always better - and that's not always the case either. There are some general rules that apply; Too much turnover, for too long can be a bad thing because it causes instability, poor moral and prevents the development of individual expertise and organizational culture. Too little turnover can denote stagnation, complacency and a weak performance culture."
From Management-Issues: Performance-related boost to CEO pay
"CEO pay in the U.S. has continued to rise on the back of strong corporate results and shareholder returns, with performance-related elements making up a growing proportion of total remuneration."
From David Maister: The Overhead Projector
"To this day, in all my presentations, I ask for the overhead projector as a matter of choice, because it is the best technology I know to minimize the barrier between me and the audience."
From Steve Roesler: Talent Management: How About a Guy with a Big Cigar?
"There are lots of conversation about Talent Management. Or at least there are a lot of opinions, comments, and furrowed brows."
From Edge Perspectives: Magic and Fun with Emerging Technologies
"Magic and fun – those are two words most people do not associate with today’s corporations. Nevertheless, I came away from a recent conference more convinced than ever that these two words will become central to corporate performance."
