4/15/07: While you were off
Sometimes the most interesting stuff pops up on my screen over the weekend. Here are some from this last weekend that you might want to check into as you start your week.
The stories from top business magazines and the business press include an article about Brazil, fear of firing, Michael Bloomberg, and self-regulation.
I also point you to new material on my site including a book review of How Doctors Think, an article on whether you should accept a promotion, and an updated resource section on understanding people. There are also pointers to the answers to supervision questions.
From the Economist: Brazil: Land of promise
"Fecundity and frustration sum up the state of Brazil these days. It is bursting with the commodities coveted by the rising economies of Asia, from soya to iron ore. No other country is better placed to cash in on the global craze for biofuels. Yet Brazil refuses to grow in line with the expectations of its 188m people."
From Business Week: Fear Of Firing
"How the threat of litigation is making companies skittish about axing problem workers"
From Fortune: Bloomberg's money machine
"There's power in that name. The man, Michael Bloomberg, runs New York City and may have even grander ambitions. The company, Bloomberg LP, is a prodigious success and just keeps getting stronger."
From HBS Working Knowledge: Industry Self-Regulation: What's Working (and What's Not)?
"Self-regulation' increasingly rings like a mantra in business. Just think of topics in the news over the past couple of months, such as the Italian fashion industry's move toward self-regulation to discourage the hiring of dangerously thin models. Or the Group of 7 nations' call for the $1.4 trillion hedge fund industry to police itself with voluntary standards and codes."
