4/22/07: While you were off
Sometimes the most interesting stuff pops up on my screen over the weekend. Here are some from this last weekend that you might want to check into as you start your week.
The stories from top business magazines and the business press include Wal-Mart at midlife, a Brazilian success story, porn on the net, go-to people, and a grim vision of the future.
I also point you to new material on my site including a book review of Lee Iacocca's new book, and an article on dealing with boomer retirements. There are also pointers to the answers to supervision questions.
From Business Week: Wal-Mart's Midlife Crisis
"Declining growth, increasing competition, and not an easy fix in sight"
From HBS: How Magazine Luiza Courts the Poor
"Brazilian retailer Magazine Luiza has developed an innovative strategy for selling to the poor, combining technology with great service that pleases both customers and employees. The question of how the company can grow without sacrificing the special qualities that have made it successful is at the heart of a case study developed by Harvard Business School professor Frances X. Frei."
From the Economist: Devices and desires
"Is lascivious online content, traditionally on top, losing its luster?"
From the Ivey Business Journal: "Go-To People": What every organization should have
"In sports, he or she is the player everyone else on the team wants to have the last shot to tie or win the game, the player who makes everyone else on the team feel like winners. As in the world of sports, so too in the world of business organizations. But who are they and how do you find them in large and small organizations?"
From the Guardian: Revolution, flashmobs, and brain chips. A grim vision of the future
"Information chips implanted in the brain. Electromagnetic pulse weapons. The middle classes becoming revolutionary, taking on the role of Marx's proletariat. The population of countries in the Middle East increasing by 132%, while Europe's drops as fertility falls.'Flashmobs' - groups rapidly mobilized by criminal gangs or terrorists groups. This is the world in 30 years' time envisaged by a Ministry of Defense team responsible for painting a picture of the "future strategic context" likely to face Britain's armed forces."
