Leadership Notes 6/16/07: in case you missed it

Lots of interesting items come across my screen every week.  Here are some that didn't make it into the blog this week, but which may make interesting reading for you this weekend.

This week I'm pointing you to articles about giving a great speech, summer reading, executives' knowledge of what workers want, private equity, and restaurant wine prices.

From the Worcester Business Journal: How to give a knock-out speech
"I recently attended a conference where CEOs were pitching their businesses to investment bankers. As a professional presence coach, I thought, "'his should be fun.'"

From Knowledge at Emory: Thought-provoking Tomes Tops Faculty Favorites
"Ambitious summer reading plans may have about the same life span as New Year’s resolutions, but that may have to do with the choice of books. To give our plans a better chance this year, Knowledge at Emory asked some serious readers—professors at Emory University and its Goizueta Business School—about their recent favorites."

From the Des Moines Register: Executives off target on what workers want
"Bosses need to get a clue. That's the boiled-down, key finding of a new Iowa workplace study by David P. Lind & Associates, a consulting firm and employment benefits broker."

From the Wall Street Journal: Fast Pace, High Stakes Lure Business Chiefs to Private Equity
"Many corporate executives are leaping to private-equity-backed companies for similar reasons. If they make their targets, they are well-rewarded. And because they don't have to worry about meeting quarterly earnings projections, they have more operating flexibility."

From Freakonomics: What’s Up with Restaurant Wine Prices?
"I believe that a high wine price is, to a certain kind of customer, a valuable signal to your dining partner/s that you are (a) knowledgeable about something as important as wine; and (b) able and willing to spend a lot of money on something that will (c) impress the partner/s."
