9/2/07: While you were off
Some of the most interesting stories cross my screen on the weekend, when I've got time to poke around a bit in search of information truffles. Here are some articles from top business media and other sources that caught my eye. I'm pointing you to stories on air travel, Google, subtle signals, leadership lessons from the Gonzalez resignation and changes in patent law.
From Business Week: Fear & Loathing at the Airport
"Long lines, late flights, near collisions—everyone is unhappy with the state of the U.S. air travel system. Unfortunately, no one, especially not the FAA, seems able to do anything about it."
From the Economist: Inside the Googleplex
"It is rare for a company to dominate its industry while claiming not to be motivated by money. Google does. But it has yet to face a crisis."
From Strategy+Business: The Science of Subtle Signals
"By analyzing overlooked behavioral cues, researchers are creating a new understanding of organizational effectiveness."
From Harvard Business Online: Leadership Lessons from the Gonzales Resignation
"US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's resignation surprised few who followed the news in recent months. But the leadership lessons from the way Gonzales ran the Justice Department and his responses to questions of his integrity and veracity can be applied to many industries outside of politics. Two of our Discussion Leaders take on the issue. Tammy Erickson suggests that the departed Attorney General may be all too common a leader, and Tom Davenport shows how fair process could have saved Gonzales -- but ended up costing him his job."
From Technology Review: Patent Law Gets Saner
"The Supreme Court sent a message to 'patent trolls': your paydays are numbered."
