Some of the most interesting business articles seem to come across my screen during the weekend. Here are five select articles from the business press to start off your workweek. I'm pointing you to two articles on the food supply, the people who help us become more efficient, body language in business, and how some companies are scooping up personal information on the web.
Last week's newsletter was "The Damon Runyon Principle." As usual there were pointers to Web and Reading Resources, too.
From Business Week: Future Seed
"When the "Frankenfood" frenzy was at its peak, Monsanto stood firm. Now most processed foods in the U.S. use genetically modified crops, and farmers around the world plant them."
From the Economist: The end of cheap food
"FOR as long as most people can remember, food has been getting cheaper and farming has been in decline. In 1974-2005 food prices on world markets fell by three-quarters in real terms. Food today is so cheap that the West is battling gluttony even as it scrapes piles of half-eaten leftovers into the bin. That is why this year's price rise has been so extraordinary."
From Strategy + Business: The Productivity Promisers
"It’s important to focus on the productivity experts who provide an approach that is effective — that, for lack of a better word, works. Such individuals present, more than tips and tools, an entire system that produces tangible results. "
From Stanford Business: Dominance and Deference in Pantomime
"Humans may be the only creatures to use words, but they share another form of communication with the rest of the animal kingdom: body language. And while a gorilla’s chest beating and foot stamping are obvious dominance displays, human equivalents can be as subtle as a furrowed brow. "
From the Dallas Morning News: Companies harvesting personal information from Web activity
"The companies you patronize know what you do, what you make, what you buy, what you watch, what you read and where you are right now. The situation creates serious risks. "
