It's the first midweek business blog review of 2008 so I tried to find excellent posts that had some kind of New Year's connection. You may not know that this is the International Year of the Potato, but I'm pointing you to a post that tells you why that's so. There are pointers to post about the year ahead, ten likely events in 2008, a quick glance at the best life hacks of 2007, and finally to Kevin Eikenberry's great questions for thinking about last year and next. But before you get there, stop off at SEO ROI where they're hosting the latest edition of Carnival of the Capitalists.
From Nature: Year of the what?
"What will 2008 bring? Cheesy chips, perhaps, seeing as 2008 is officially the United Nation’s International Year of the Potato, and, at least in Greece, the Year of Feta. The UN has also declared 2008 to be the International Year of Sanitation, the International Year of Planet Earth (which lasts for 3 years) and the International Year of Languages."
Wally's Comment: Read this piece to find the solid logic behind the emphasis on the potato, and the shaky logic and rampant self-interest behind some other namings.
From HarvardBusiness.org: The Year Ahead
"First, we asked our authors to look back at 2007 and tell us what they learned from you. Now, we're asking them to look ahead to 2008. In these posts, the experts speculate on what we might encounter in the coming year."
From Business Week: Ten Likely Events in 2008
"After pondering what won't happen, we decided to don our prediction hats again. Think: President Bloomberg and an Apple flat screen, or maybe not."
From LifeHack: Year in Review: The 70 Best Lifehacks of 2007
"If you want to be more productive in the New Year, take a look at these 70 best lifehacks of 2007 now."
Wally's Comment: There are interesting blogs and there are useful blogs. LifeHack is an interesting, useful blog.
From Kevin Eikenberry: What Excites You about the New Year?
"This is the first post in a continuing series designed to help you create a great 2008 - using questions to reflect on last year, and project into the future."
Wally's Comment: This is the midpoint of an excellent series that Kevin has been doing, sharing questions that will help you reflect on the year past and move purposefully into the New Year. He's offering a free tool on the site to help you with the process. Read the questions. Get the tool.
