"Mastery" is a powerful concept. When you have mastered a domain, you can concentrate on the challenge at hand and let your technique flow naturally. You don't have to think about fingering when you reach for the perfect note.

Mastery comes slowly. The best researchers tell us that it takes ten years to master a domain. Once we have achieved mastery we can do wonderful things, but we are not done with the basics.

I came upon a combat photographer sitting on the ground, staring off at the horizon. He adjusted his camera, then looked down. Then he repeated the process. Again. And again.

I asked what he was doing. "Practicing," he told me. He was running through different f-stop and shutter speed combinations on his Leica, doing them by feel. When he was done with that drill, he told me, he had a few more to do.

I asked him how long he'd been a photographer. He told me 22 years. "And you still practice?"

"Masters practice every day," he said as he went back to his drills.
