Here are five choice articles from the business press to start off your workweek. This week I'm pointing you to articles about the scope, results, payback, impact and causes of the current state of the US economy.

Last week's newsletter was "The Christopher Wren Rule for Strategy." As usual there were pointers to Web and Reading Resources, too.

From Business Week: The Financial Crisis
"This credit quake looks to be the severest threat to the economy in decades, and its tremors are being felt from Wall Street to the Great Wall."

Wally's Comment: Business Week offers a series of articles about the scope of the situation.

From the Economist: Briefing on the Financial Crisis
"In our special briefing, we look at how near Wall Street came to systemic collapse this week—and how the financial system will change as a result. We start with how financiers—and their critics—have labored under a delusion."

Wally's Comment: The Economist concentrates on how the financial system may change. It's another of their thorough and thoughtful briefings which also include pointers to background material.

From CFO Magazine: Atonement
"Companies in all industries are paying for the transgressions of the banking sector."

Wally's Comment: At CFO Magazine, they blame the bankers. Because this is a magazine for business financial officers, you'll find some discussion of impacts you won't find elsewhere.

From Kiplinger: How bad will the economy get?
"Our 2008 forecast: A mild contraction, with a bounceback in the second half."

Wally's Comment: Kiplinger shares its forecast for 2008. It's more optimistic than many others.

From the New York Times: Who Created this Monster?
"Yes, the markets can bite back. Executives, regulators and politicians are scrambling to figure out just what created the current crisis and how it can be fixed."

Wally's Comment: This is one of the questions on everyone's mind. How did this all happen when there were all those smart people on Wall Street?
