Jim Collins has a great piece on the Fortune site titled: "The secret of enduring greatness." Here's the lead.
"I don't know how many times I've had the Fortune 500 presented to me as Exhibit A by those who argue that it's time to give up on a 20th-century American idea. Forget about building great companies that endure, they tell me."
Collins acknowledges the fact that most companies don't endure. But he also reviews several that have.
Companies like Ford and CitiGroup are facing serious challenges right now. Others, like GE, are strong but challenged. Still others, like Proctor & Gamble are going strong. Nucor has been profitable for 41 years and counting. Xerox, has stumbled but kept moving.
The secrets seem to me to be strong culture combined with adaptability and a purpose beyond profit. Read the article for the full, nuanced, presentation.
The most important point that Collins makes is that just because most companies do something or perform at a particular level, doesn't mean that your company is destined to do the same. This is one of those cases where leadership does make a difference.
Resource Note
The book that Collins wrote with Jerry Porras, Built to Last, is still a good read, packed with excellent lessons.
