This morning, my neighbor told me to "Have a great Memorial Day." I don't know how to do that. This day isn't for me. It's a day when I'm called to remember the sacrifices of others.

Every one of those others went off to war with the idea that he or she would come home. Every one left memories as their legacy. Every one is a case of promise denied.

Today my job and yours is to remember them. Today we hold their memories gently in mind and savor the thoughts of what might have been. Today we honor their service and their too-soon departure from us.

How you do it is up to you. You can pray for them. The Episcopal liturgy includes a wonderful line about praying for "those we love, but see no longer."

You can attend any of hundreds of ceremonies and speeches. That is not my way.

Tonight I will take some time to think and to remember people who gave their lives serving the country I love. They are some of the many people I "love, but see no longer."

But they are special because of their sacrifice. And so, sometime tonight, I will offer up the Warrior's Toast to "absent friends." Join me.

Today is Memorial Day and we are called to remember the lives and sacrifices of those who have purchased our freedom with their blood.

Remember.

Not just today.
