"I want to be alone!"
Greta Garbo delivered that famous line in the 1932 movie, Grand Hotel. When others claimed the line represented Garbo's own wishes, she would correct them this way.
"I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be let alone.' There is all the difference."
If Carol Hymowitz is right, lots of CEOs would share that sentiment and being let alone might actually make them more productive. Hymowitz' column on Monday was titled: "Packed Calendars Rule over Executives." Here a key excerpt.
"Other CEOs are equally chained to crammed agendas. They complain about a lack of spontaneity in their workdays and little time to mull over problems that crop up. They often have to make do with phone calls and emails when a face-to-face meeting might be more effective."
Even super-beings such as CEO's can't be on the run all the time. You need down time. According to the creation story in the Bible, even God rested after creating the world.
You need downtime to regain equilibrium. The experiences that help us grow also stress us. You need time to re-charge your batteries and regain your balance.
You need downtime for reflection. You can't learn from experience unless you have time to reflect on it. You can't stretch your mind without reading and other personal activities.
You need downtime for creativity. The best ideas come when you're relaxed. The breakthrough ideas about work come from things other than work.
You need pleasant surprises. If every moment is planned there's no time for them.
We're not made to charge about at full speed all the time. We're not made to plan out every minute either.
Take time to relax. Take time to recover. Take time to reflect.
