I love business stories. I love to write them and I love to read them. That's why I got excited when Joe Nocera of the New York Times wrote a post on his new blog titled "The Best Business Books Ever?" Here's an excerpt.
"A reader asked me to name other business narratives that I thought deserved the title 'great.' (Narratives only; no management tomes or advice books allowed.) After consulting several of my rabbis — the author and a former Times public editor Dan Okrent, the editor-in-chief of Time Inc. John Huey, and Adrian Zackheim, who runs the Portfolio imprint at Penguin Books — here’s my short list."
It's a great list, but what I liked best was Nocera's view that stories about business make far more helpful and interesting reading than "management" books. Nocera then asked his readers for recommendations about other narrative business books. The response was the basis for another post. Here's a tidbit.
"Looking over your comments about narrative non-fiction in business, you suggested an embarrassingly large handful of books that caused me to slap my forehead and think: 'How could I have missed that one?' So without any further ado, here are my — or rather, your — additions."
Nocera doesn't just tell you want great books his readers suggested. He also tells you why he didn't include some books that lots of readers recommended.
Check out these two great posts. Next week I'll offer a few recommendations of mine about other books that include great business stories.
