Here's my pick of the five best posts from this week's business blogs. I'm pointing you to posts on employees who never complain, Millennials and HR, innovation, teamwork, and leadership development.
In addition to blogging here about leadership issues, I'm now blogging at Momentor on career issues. There will be a post similar to this one but on career issues over there every week.
From Execupundit: The Employees Who Never Complain
Wally's Comment: An excellent post to remind us all about the people who work for us that we often take for granted. Don't just read my little précis here. Read the post.
From Personal Branding: Millennials Are Taking Over the Workplace - Is HR Prepared?
"I told everyone on Twitter last night that I would not be blogging today, but I had a slight change of heart. I got my interview questions from Lisa Orrell back just in time to post them and have content readily available to you. Lisa is also announcing her new MySpace blog for millennials seeking career advice. Lisa is very well in-tune with the “millennial tribe” and how we are changing the workplace. She feels that it’s for the better and I can’t agree more. Her experience dealing with HR is invaluable and today she shares her knowledge with all of you. "
Wally's Comment: A post by a Millennial about Millenials. What could be better?
From Random Rantings: Is innovation over-rated?
"Do innovating firms perform better? Evidence from academic research on the topic is certainly equivocal: it is very hard to find solid evidence that firms that innovate (e.g. obtain more patents) perform better."
Wally's Comment: I love it when someone qualified puts some analytical tools to work on one of the day's favorite buzzwords.
From All Things Workplace: There Certainly Is an "I" in Teamwork
"Regular readers know that I'm a pretty positive and mellow dude. This is, in fact, true. Except when I hear stupid stuff that gets repeated so often and thoughtlessly that it becomes faux "management wisdom." When repeated by people with position power it can take entire groups of employees down the wrong path. One such example: "There is no 'I' in "teamwork."
Wally's Comment: Guess what? Team members have self-interest, too.
From Great Leadership: What’s Up with All of This Leadership Development, Anyway?
"The demand for leadership development hits me right in the face every day! I’ve been swamped at work these days (well OK, running off to the beach a couple times may have contributed to that). But it’s not just me – my entire team is stretched to the max, and always has been for the three years I’ve led them. My friends in the executive coaching business seem to be doing well, and I get regular calls from recruiters, sourcing openings for leadership development. And the “Business & Leadership” section of Borders and Barnes & Noble seems to get bigger every year. So where’s all this demand coming from? Here’s what I’m seeing."
Wally's Comment: This is a savvy review by a seasoned practitioner. It's worth reading slowly, with a pencil handy.
