Every week, reporters around the continent write great business stories that don't make it onto your screen or into your local paper. And every week I scour newspapers around the continent to identify five of those great stories to enrich your weekend reading. This week I'm pointing you to stories about a staffing company success, an interview with the CEO of UPS, a financial planner on the hot seat, expert opinion that the worst is not over, and MBA students re-thinking their employment choices.

Look to your left to see what I blogged about here this week. Over at Momentor I blogged about "20 Tips for Those Just Starting Out" and did my weekly selection of Top Career Posts.

Last week's newsletter was "The Ross Hidy Rule." As usual there were pointers to Web and Reading Resources, too.

The Carnival of Human Resources is hosted by SharpBrains.

And now, here's my pick of the five best local stories this week.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Staffing company started in basement and keeps growing
"Even in a beleaguered labor market, with its prime segment in a long slump, QPS Cos. expects continued growth - with no end in sight."

Wally's Comment: No matter what the economy is, there are always companies doing well.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Managing for future gets UPS through cycles
"[Scott] Davis sat down with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s editorial board Tuesday to discuss how the Sandy Springs-based company, as the world’s largest package carrier, is reacting to the financial crisis, dealing with higher fuel costs and expanding overseas."

Wally's Comment: UPS is affected by about everything that happens in the economy. Their CEO covers a lot of ground in this interview.

From the Portland Oregonian: Calm is financial planner's only recourse
"Think the stock market turmoil has been on your mind a lot this week? Try being a certified financial planner. "

Wally's Comment: No matter what business you're in, it's always a people business.

From the Newark Star-Ledger: Expert warns market storm is still brewing
"Robert Bruner is co-author of "The Panic of 1907: Lessons Learned from the Market's Perfect Storm" and dean of the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. He spoke yesterday with The Star-Ledger about the current crisis and how it compares with previous panics. "

Wally's Comment: Not everyone thinks that the worst is over. Professor Bruner is one of them.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer: Crisis has business students rethinking their plans
"Pat Pow-anpongkul spent his summer interning as an analyst at Lehman Bros. in New York. He received a job offer in mid-July and was looking forward to returning to Wall Street after graduating from the Wharton School next May."

Wally's Comment: Not all investments are in stocks and bonds. Many MBA students coming close to graduation are re-thinking which companies they want to invest themselves with.
