Things are strange. If the Fed cuts the prime rate much more, they'll be paying you to borrow money. And, in the meantime, the government seems more and more like a ballpark hot dog vendor. Only instead of hot dogs in the basket, it's money.

"Green money here! Get your green money here!"

Over at American Express they want some of that money. The last time I looked they were in the charge card business. But they decided to become a depository institution and cash in on the bailout.

"Green money here! Get your green money here!"

Government budgets are tight. States and towns need help making ends meet. The State of California and at least four Michigan towns figure it's easier to balance their budgets with federal money paid by taxpayers all over the country instead of just the ones in their jurisdiction.

"Green money here! Get your green money here!"

We've shelled out for banks and insurance companies so why not another industry or two. Tomorrow the US auto companies head for Capitol Hill. They want some of that money. After all, they say, they'll be out of money soon if we don't give them some.

If this keeps up every business will be bailed out. Every citizen will get a stimulus check. And all that will be left will be to figure out how to pay for it. Maybe we can get a bailout from the Chinese.
