A lot of CEOs said that everyone at their company was a team until it came time to share the sacrifice during this downturn. Then they turned out to be quite happy to keep all their salary and bonus and perks while they cut the jobs of the admin assistants and factory workers.
An exception is Novellus CEO Richard Hill. The company announced on Tuesday that Hill was taking a fifty percent salary cut in 2099 and giving up all bonuses and options during the year.
The company also announced that they were going to cut 350 positions "through attrition and layoffs." CEOs taking pay cuts won't solve every problem. But they can signal that the CEO really does think you're all in it together.

Wally,
This is one of those tidbits that, at the minimum, offers some sense of sanity and decency during difficult times.
No doubt there will still be critics who will find something wrong with the gesture; I think it should be the norm rather than the exception.

You're right Steve. I've gotten emails (no comments though) from people who think it isn't "enough." If you look for what's wrong, you can always find something. But if you look for something to praise, you can usually find that, too.
