Roger Corman is one of the cult favorites among American film makers. He made a lot of B movies, mostly horror movies, and a lot of money doing it. Classics include The Undead and Little Shop of Horrors.
Corman had a rule about monster movies. It was: "When the monster is dead, the movie is over." Something similar can be said about the manned space program. When Apollo was done, the excitement was over.
When Apollo 11 splashed down safely on July 24, 1969, the enthusiasm for the space program splashed down with it.
We had achieved the goal that President Kennedy had set back in 1961. Human beings had walked on the moon. We got them back safely to earth.
So we crossed the moon mission of the To Do list and went on to other things. There were five more missions that put humans on the moon but, with the exception of the tense moments of Apollo 13, the excitement was mostly gone.
There haven't been fresh human footprints on the moon since 1972. During its heyday, the NASA budget was over 5 percent of the Federal budget. Today it's around half a percent.
The mission was done. The excitement was over.
Boss's Bottom Line
Big projects that succeed are often followed by a period of letdown. Take time to celebrate and maybe even to recuperate but remember that big challenges get big response.
