We didn't have a lot of money when I was growing up. We weren't poor by any reasonable measure, but we had to weigh the cost of things.
That's not a problem for me anymore. I'm not rich by any reasonable measure, but I've got all the important things. I have a wonderful family and friends and I wake up every day excited to get on with life and the work I love. More money would make more things possible, but by any reasonable measure, I have enough.
So I don't really need to read the right hand column on the menu when I go to dinner on Monday. I will anyway. It's habit, carried over from my youth and a different situation.
We all have things like that, little voices in our heads and habits that persist long after the need for them has disappeared into the mists of the past. Most times they don't have any affect. Sometimes they're a reminder of how things were.
But, sometimes, those habits and voices keep us from being as effective or as human as we want to be. Then it's time to identify what's going on and root out the practice that we do almost unconsciously and that causes problems.
Boss's Bottom Line
Take some time to identify those situations where you "read the right side of
the menu," even if you don't have to. Then make a conscious effort to rid
yourself of the behavior that once was helpful, but now is no longer so.
