If you're a boss, you know that every day is a challenge to do better. Here is a tip remind you of how to be a great boss. It's based on the same research I used to develop my programs and the Working Supervisor's Support Kit.
Show up a lot.
All good things flow from this. If you show up frequently, your arrival is not an event, just a normal part of the work day. When that happens, you can have conversations with your people, make important points, and hear what they have to say. You also gain the opportunity to assess behavior and performance, encourage good performance, and catch problems early so that it only take a small correction to make things right.
Here are some other tips to ponder.
Your behavior is what you say and do and the only behavior you can control. Use it to influence what others say and do.
Set clear expectations.
Give team members the maximum control possible over their work.
Remember that your job is to help the team and team members succeed.
The tips on this page change from time to time. Check back frequently, subscribe to my RSS feed , or follow me on Twitter .
If you find these tips helpful, you should consider
purchasing my Working Supervisor's Support Kit.

"Show Up a Lot" is a great concept and a valuable suggestion. Relationships that drive performance are created in this way.

Very true, Mike and showing up a lot also lowers some barriers.

I think both ideas are helpful. I have an interesting situation in that I co-lead a group with someone who control to staff. It is hard to balance his team with mine, especailly since the teams share administrative staff.
