When you were an individual contributor and wanted to do something, you just did it. But now that you're a boss you don't have that power anymore. You have to convince your team members to do things and they have the final word.

Thanks for expressing this so beautifully, Wally - as a boss, I can fully vouch for this one. I have worked in Matrix structures with people under me reporting functionally to others and line managementto me. In this scenario, I have found Influence more "powerful" than authority and power. While underhanded power playing has frequently succeeded in the short-term,I have found that my influence has stretched way into the long term in helping me create a loyal band of followers and a well bonded and successful team.
