How often have you seen a headline that starts this way?
"How to lead like …"
Next there's the name of a famous leader like Steve Jobs or Jack Welch. Or maybe it's the name of a historical figure. Abraham Lincoln a big favorite.
There's a wee bit of sense in this. All great leaders do the same things. They set a clear direction. They define purpose. They help the team and team members succeed.
But they all do those things in different ways. Every great leader leads in his or her own way. That's your challenge.
Lead like yourself. Identify your strengths and your experience and build on them.
Lead like yourself. Identify your weaknesses and make them irrelevant.
Lead like yourself. Learn what core values are inside you and allow them to be part of your own personal leadership style. Show on the outside what you know on the inside.
Lead like yourself. Look closely at the example of successful leaders and adopt what works for you, but filter everything through your values and your style. Some of those things won't make it through the filter.
Boss's Bottom Line
In the end you're judged on how well you do, not how well you imitate someone else.

I think more managers should think like this! Too often people tell you to try to be something you aren't. Being yourself is much better for leadership and gaining your employees respect.

Good points, Brittany. It's also a lot harder to be effective when you have to spend energy on being something you're not. Thanks for adding to the conversation.
