For most of us, the weekend is less agenda-driven and more relaxed than our usual weekday. You're more likely to slip into that state of relaxed alertness that psychologists call "alpha." That's when you're most likely to have creative thoughts. Here are a couple of thought starters from Bill Parcells and former Coke CEO Neville Isdell.
This is going to be a heck of a Super Bowl for Coach Bill Parcells. This year, the competing teams are the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. Both teams have won Super Bowls with Parcells as their coach. Not only that, both the coaches of this year's Super Bowl teams are his protégés. When he was asked about that in an interview, Parcells said:
"Those that follow, that's what's important."
Your legacy lives beyond you in the people you've touched, coached, trained, and mentored. No one has said that more strongly than former Coca-Cola CEO Neville Isdell.
"I do not have a legacy unless my successor is successful."
So, who's your legacy?
Since you also have more time for serious reading on the weekend you may want to pick up a copy of Isdell's book. He's not your everyday CEO. He was born in Northern Ireland, raised in South Africa, and he's worked around the world. He started his working life as a social worker, but he thinks that helped him because "as a social worker you have to get people to change their own minds."
Isdell is credited with turning Coke around and he's written a book about it. The book is Inside Coca-Cola: A CEO's Life Story of Building the World's Most Popular Brand.
