If you're a boss, you know that every day is a challenge to do better. This tip is based on the same research I used to develop my programs and the Working Supervisor's Support Kit .

Read fiction

Sure it's important to keep up with your business reading, but you should read some fiction, too. It's fun and it engages you. You get lost in fiction in a way you usually won't with factual material.

The good news is that reading fiction will help you become a better leader, too. Researchers from the University of Toronto tell us that reading fiction will help you improve your emotional intelligence.

So, there goes your last excuse. Go, read some fiction and have fun!

If you find these tips helpful, you should consider purchasing my Working Supervisor's Support Kit.

Great advice, but it begs the question, what are you reading? Or what have you read lately?

I recently finished Room by Emma Donoghue. It is well written, but a challenging topic. One that helps keep things in perspective. As a lighter note, I started A Density of Souls by Christopher Rice.

I re-read a lot of fiction. Hemingway short stories get dipped into at least once a week. I re-read novels I've loved. The biggest favorites are Death Comes for the Archbishop (Willa Cather), Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea, Fitzgerald's Great Gatsby. I devoured Stieg Larsson's Dragon Tattoo trilogy. A lot of my fiction reading runs to historical novels, the one I'm reading at the moment is Tides of War by Stella Tillyard. I've always got at least one fiction book working.

Although it's not in the category of classics like what you read, my favorite fictional leader is Miles Vorkosigan from the sci fi series by Lois McMaster Bujold.

Thanks for sharing that. I don't know if I'd call what I read "classics." That may be the case for things I go back to, but that's also a function of reading seriously for fifty-plus years. There's a lot of good stuff and lot of other stuff, but only a few things that I like reading again and again. It's a blessing that I wish for you and every reader.
