Ask your boss

Part of your job is to help your boss succeed. Don't guess what you should do. Ask your boss.

Ask your boss what contribution he or she expects from you.

Ask your boss when and how to give him or her updates.

Ask your boss how he or she measures success in your job.

    Sometimes the simple things are the best things to do. This post reminded me of times when a group of us would be hyothesizing about the facts of a situation, someone's motives or thinking processes with respect to an event, and after some time spent ruminating without any clarity our leader would ask "why don't we just ask them?" He'd usually then pick up the phone, we'd ask, and generally we found out something that we had not even been considering!

    That tactic was a great thing to learn, and is still quite effective for me to this day.
