Independent business blogs are blogs that aren't supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don't need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don't get as much publicity.
This week, I'm pointing you to posts on attitudes, keeping your team on track, full contact leadership, fighting stress with feedback and what to do when pushing harder doesn't work.
From Gwyn Teatro: Attention Leaders: Five Attitudes to Take to
work in 2013
"Attitude is a big deal. The way we look at things and the beliefs
we hold about them influence what we choose to do and how we choose to behave
when we’re doing it. That’s why I think it’s always a good idea,
especially for those who lead, to conduct something of an attitude inventory
from time to time. And, what better time to do it than at the beginning of
a New Year? So, with that in mind, here are five attitudes that I think will be
necessary for business leaders to take, in achieving success in 2013 and
beyond:"
From Jesse Lyn Stoner: How to Keep Your Team Goals on Track
"A team might
start off aligned around a shared vision, but unaligned systems and practices
can quickly derail them."
From Art Petty: Full Contact Leadership
"The most effective leaders I know
enjoy and invest time honing their skills and techniques through training and
education, but mostly, they focus on getting their hands dirty on the front
lines with their team members."
From Steve Roesler: Increase Feedback, Reduce Stress
"Managers add stress
to their lives by postponing important conversations and letting them build up
until their heads start to feel like a balloon waiting to burst. Or, we try to
submerge those thoughts until we discover that they tend to pop out in strange
and often harmful ways. How many times have we received--or given--a terse
comment that really was the result of some long- unspoken feeling?"
From Karin Hurt: Push Harder, Dig Deeper, Raise the Bar...
Or?
"When we
feel stuck, there is a tendency to push… harder. What if that doesn’t
work?"

That's it for this week's selections from independent business blogs. If you liked this piece you may enjoy my regular post on "Leadership Reading to Start Your Week" points you to choice articles from the business schools, the business press and major consulting firms. The last issue had pointers to articles about leadership, start-ups, Starbucks, the entrepreneurial Murphy clan, the sharing economy, the paper industry, and industrial excellence and American manufacturing.
How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review
The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here's how I select the posts you see in this review.
They must be published within the previous week.
They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.
They must be from an independent business blog.
As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.
Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.
I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.
Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do better and live a better life. At Results vs Activities, I join other bloggers with posts on talent development. .
