If you're a boss, you know that every day is a challenge to do better. This tip is based on the same research I used to develop my programs and the Working Supervisor's Support Kit .
Performance and Learning
It takes time to master a task. A team member who's learning a task won't perform as well as he or she will once the task is mastered. During the learning time there's tension between productivity and learning.
Sometimes you need to allow for the natural mistakes of learning so that your team member develops. The payoff for that is down the road, when you don't need to teach that task or supervise it closely.
Other times, you have to sacrifice learning to productivity. That payoff is immediate, but if you do it too often, your team member never achieves mastery and morale suffers.
If you have a copy of the Working Supervisor's Support Kit , you'll find more on this in the chapters titled "Some Basic Principles."
Wally's Working Supervisor's Support Kit is a collection of information and tools to help working supervisors do a better job. It's based on what Wally's learned in over twenty years of supervisory skills training. Click here to check it out.
